ABSTRACT

In New Jersey, virus surveillance is primarily conducted for eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in Culiseta melanura from resting boxes and West Nile virus (WNV) in Culex and other mosquito species from a variety of traps. Both Culiseta melanura and Mixed Culex species displayed seasonal patterns that were different from recent historical trends. Despite lower population trends in Culiseta, EEE virus was detected in several Cs. melanura populations. No spread to mammalian populations was detected. WNV activity was very high in Culex populations yet spread of either virus to mammalian populations remained limited with no horse cases and seven human cases of WNV to date.
